Chikankari stitch: Khatao, Bakhiya on cuffs

Khatao - Khatao, also known as Khatawa or Katava, is a refined cutwork appliqué technique that mirrors Bakhia (shadow work) but with far greater precision. Motifs are first crafted on calico, then appliquéd and embroidered onto the final fabric, creating ultra-fine paisley and floral patterns that feel delicately etched into the cloth.

Bakhiya - Cross satin stitch done on the wrong side of the fabric to give a shadow effect on the right side.

This product is hand embroidered at the Amhara studio. Slight differences in embroidery speak to the hand processes involved and add to the uniqueness of the product .
