Threaded with Independence: Women's Day
Amhara StoriesThree Writers. Three Choices. Three Ways of Being.
They write stories.
They write ads.
They write poems.
And now, they’re writing something else.
The lives they chose.
This Women’s Day, Amhara presents Threaded with Independence: a short video series featuring three writers whose lives reflect different expressions of freedom.
Shreya. Sumedha. Tapshi.
Three women.
Three lives.
One common thread: Choice.
Through intimate conversations, they reflect on what independence means to them today, beyond performance, beyond expectation and beyond the quiet pressure women often place on themselves.
Because sometimes independence is loud.
But often, it is quiet.
It looks like stepping away.
Living alone.
Speaking honestly.
Or simply allowing yourself to change your mind.

Episode 1
Shreya | Choosing Again
For the longest time, Shreya believed her biggest dream was her career.
It felt like something she owed the women who came before her, the generations who fought for women to have space, ambition and voice in the world. Until she stepped away.
And in that pause, she realised something profound. Their fight was never just about building careers. It was about something deeper. The freedom to choose. And sometimes, the courage to choose again.

Tapshi Dhanda | Choosing Your Own Life
Single. Living alone in Bangalore. A writer and editor shaping a life around what brings her joy, delight and meaning. For Tapshi, independence is the freedom to step away: from performing, pleasing, and constantly self-surveilling.
To live a life that doesn’t need to be explained, justified, or measured.
Simply, her own!

Episode 3
Sumedha Dogra | Choosing Your Own Voice
For over a decade, Sumedha has written ads, many of them about womanhood.Strong. Determined. Brave. Graceful. Authentic. All the ways the world likes to define women.
But somewhere along the way, she began to question the need for definitions at all. Perhaps independence is this: The freedom to step outside the adjectives. And to choose a voice that is entirely your own.

The Thread
At Amhara, we often think about the word thread.
Chikankari itself is built slowly, patiently. One stitch at a time, carried forward by generations of artisans. Independence, too, is rarely a single moment.
It is a thread that runs through our lives.
Through the choices we make.
Through the lives we shape.
This Women’s Day, we celebrate women who are writing their own versions of freedom.
However quiet.
However unconventional.
However beautifully their own.
